Spicata) and watermint (M. Aquatica). Peppermint oil is commonly used in foods and beverages as a flavor, formulation of shampoo, conditioners, and cosmetics as well as a good fragrance in soap industries.

It is a natural hybrid of two species of Mint, Water Mint (Mentha Aquatica) and Spearmint (Mentha Spicata).

- In Western Europe, during the 18th century, peppermint became popular as a folk remedy for vomiting, nausea, morning sickness, respiratory infections, and menstrual disorders.
- It was first listed in 1721, in London Pharmacopeia.

The most active components of this hybrid oil are menthol (30% - 40%) and menthone (20% - 30%). It is also comprised of many other minor constituents including mentha furan, limonene, and 1,8 –cineole. The chemical composition of the leaves of peppermint may vary with geographical region, plant maturity, and processing conditions.
